Water conference

Each year, Year 9 and 10 students from selected schools throughout the region are invited to participate in GWMWater’s annual water research program which looks at whether our water use is sustainable today, tomorrow and beyond.

This program links into VELS and provides students with an opportunity to investigate water use in their local area. The culmination of student research is presented at GWMWater’s annual water conference at the University of Ballarat, Horsham campus.

2012 Conference

Students from Ararat, Dimboola, Edenhope and Horsham attended the 2012 conference to address the question ‘What does a secure water supply mean to your area?’

Live crosses to Thailand, New Zealand, Alice Springs and Perth, combined with an address by a Marian College student who visited her family in the Phillipines, provided an insight into water issues around the globe.

A panel of GWMWater experts answered questions from the floor on a variety of water related issues raised by both students and teachers.

One of the key benefits to GWMWater from the conference was the opportunity for decision makers to hear the voice of youth in our region. Feedback from students on recreational water allocations and the associated costs was included in a report to the July meeting of the GWMWater Board.

Six students took home an MP3 Player for their group work and Edenhope College was awarded $1000 for their conference presentation.
